America Reads and America Counts

The America Reads and America Counts program at Cal State Los Angeles is part of a national campaign that aims to develop children’s reading and math skills through tutoring. Since 1999, full-time Cal State L.A. students provide a weekly average of 10 hours of one-on-one support to inner-city elementary schools in Los Angeles. The program has sustained  partnership with Kennedy Elementary.

There are two annual special events coordinated by this program:

  1. Read Across America is a nationwide literacy advocacy event, is coordinated by the student tutors for the children who participate in the program.

  2. Cal State L.A., Here We Come is a higher education focus event where an estimated 300 children who participate in the program, are invited to the campus for a visit. Student tutors assist in coordinating this event by bridging the university community with the communities we serve.
