April 2018 Bulletin


    Data Goals: SBAC Math 23%, SBAC ELA 29%, & Reclassification Rate 22%       

All 3rd – 6th grade students will be taking the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium. This new test will be taken on an IPAD computer. Testing will begin on April 18th and end on May 18th.  Each grade level will be tested on Math or English Language Arts at a time. 5th Grade will also be tested in Science.  You will be informed of the specific dates your child will be taking the new assessment.  Make sure your child sleeps at least 8 hours the night before the test.  The new test will be assessing our students on the new Common Core State Standards.

4/3       Last Shortened Day Tuesday:  This will be the last Tuesday that the students will be dismissed at 1:24 p.m.  From now on, student dismissal will be at 2:24 p.m. every Tuesday.


4/4       6th Grade Students walking to Belevedere MS:  The 6th grade students that will be attending Belvedere Middle School will take a walking field trip to the middle school.  The counselors will be reviewing important information that every incoming 6th grade student will need to know.


4/6       Coffee with the Principal:  Parents will have the opportunity to ask Mr. Martinez any questions about Kennedy Elementary School.  This informal meeting with no agenda will take place in the auditorium at 8:30 a.m.  Questions, suggestions, and concerns are welcome


4/12     ELAC Meeting:  The language census will be the main topic of this parent ELAC meeting that will take place in         the Parent Center at 8:30 a.m.


4/13     Jog-a-thon Fundraiser:  Students will have the opportunity raise money for NEXT YEAR’S fieldtrips.  Student will be asked to seek pledges (flat rates only).  For example, one can pledge $5 if the student runs 10 laps.              Students have been given an envelope to submit money and a permission slip must be signed by parents to raise             money.  Students will be able to win prizes.  First place, two tickets to Knotts!


4/16 – 4/20       Book Fair: Our school library will be hosting another Scholastic Book Fair for an entire week.  Parents can visit the Book Fair on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 2:20 p.m. to 3:20 p.m., and on Friday from 2:20 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.  All proceeds from the Book Fair go to purchasing new books for our library.


4/17     5th Grade Growing Up Film:  The school nurse will show the boys and girls (separately) the video on the development of the human body.  The nurse will also answer questions on the topic. Parents must sign the a permission slip before their child views the video.  Parents can also preview the video on April 10, 2018 in the Nurse’s Office.


4/18     5th Grade State Science Test:  All 5th grade students will be given the CAST which will check for understanding   of the California State Standards for Science.


4/24     3rd Grade State English Language Arts Testing:  All 3rd grade students will be given the ELA SBAC which             will check for understanding of the new California State Standards for ELA.


4/24     4th & 5th Grade State English Language Arts Testing: All 4th & 5th grade students will be given the ELA SBAC   which will check for understanding of the new California State Standards for ELA.


4/25     Johnny Appleseed Play: Ms. Ybarra’s class has been working  extremely hard on  preparing the play: Johnny             Appleseed.  Parents are invited to view the play at 1:45 p.m. in the auditorium.


4/26     6th Grade Pan-o-rama & Culmination Pictures: All 6th grade students will be photographed in the Pan-o-rama picture and will be taking individual Culmination pictures.


4/26     PAW Pride Assemblies:  Each month, 3 students are recognized from each class during an assembly.  The three categories are:  One for Student of the Month and 2 for Citizenship.  If your child will receive an award, you will be notified and invited to the assembly.


4/27     Cal State LA, Here We Come:  Cal St. LA has invited the students that the EPIC tutors have worked with throughout the past school year to the Cal St. campus.  They will see what an actual college lecture hall, college lab, and just college life in general looks and sounds like.


Workshops in the Parent Center this Month:  All workshops at 8:30 a.m. and are in Room 9.  4/3 Values and Sexuality, 4/4 Depression, 4/5 Restorative Justice in LAUSD, 4/10 How to speak to your children about sexuality, 4/11 Grief and Loss, 4/18 Female and Male Anatomy, 4/24 Planned Parenthood, & 4/25 Family Violence Prevention


Updated  Emergency Cards – If you have recently moved or changed ANY telephone numbers, please come by our Main Office and fill out a new emergency card.  We do not want to be in an emergency situation where we would not be able to reach you for any reason.


Absences/Tardies – All students with chronic absences and tardies (students arriving after 8:11 a.m.) will be receiving a letter.  If students continue to be late after receiving a letter, parents must attend a mandatory meeting with a District Pupil Services & Attendance (PSA) Counselor.
